Fixed & Removable Retainers
The most important part of your orthodontic journey starts the day your braces come off. Retainers are the only way to guarantee your teeth stay straight forever.
Teeth Move.
We Stop Them.
Research shows that teeth naturally shift throughout life, whether you have had braces or not. This is called "relapse." The only way to combat this unpredictable movement and protect your investment is by wearing retainers. We view retention not as the end of treatment, but as the beginning of your lifetime smile maintenance.

Transitioning To Your New Smile For The Rest Of Your Life
On the day your braces are removed, we move straight into the retention phase to ensure there is zero movement.

We secure the position in place.
Immediately after polishing your teeth, we take a final digital scan. For many patients, we usually bond a thin wire to the back of the lower front teeth (and occasionally the upper) to provide additional protection in conjunction with your removable retainer

You wear them full-time.
You will receive your custom removable clear retainers on the same day. For the first 3 months, these must be worn full-time (day and night), only removed for eating and brushing. This allows the bone around your teeth to harden in its new position.

You switch to nights only.
After the initial stabilisation period, you can switch to wearing your retainers at night only. This is a lifetime commitment ("Night time for a Lifetime") to ensure your smile looks as good in 20 years as it does today.
Double Protection = Peace Of Mind
We typically provide a combination of retainer types to ensure the best long-term stability.
Clear &
Comfortable
These look just like aligners. They are custom-made to fit over your entire arch of teeth. They protect the alignment of all your teeth, including the back molars, and protect against grinding at night.
Always On
Duty
A thin steel wire is bonded behind the front 6 teeth. It is invisible to others and you will quickly forget it is there. It helps to prevent relapse in the areas most likely to move (the front teeth). It is worn in conjunction with your removable retainer.
Built To
Last
Our retainers are made from high-grade, durable medical plastic. However, like tyres on a car, they will eventually wear down. We offer a quick and easy replacement service whenever you need a fresh set.

Answers to Your Queries About Retainers
Find clear, honest answers about our services, costs, and treatment options when it comes to retainers treatments with Dublin Orthodontics.
Yes. At Dublin Orthodontics, your first set of removable retainers (and fixed bonded retainers where applicable) is fully included in your comprehensive treatment plan. There is no extra fee on the day your braces come off.
If you lose or break your retainer, there is a fee for a replacement set. Please contact our front desk for the current price.
The simple answer is: Indefinitely. If you want your teeth to stay straight, you must wear your retainers. We say "Night time for a Lifetime." If you stop wearing them, your teeth will move, regardless of how long ago you finished treatment.
Clean your removable retainers every morning with a toothbrush and cold water. Do not use hot water (it can warp the plastic) or toothpaste (it can scratch them, making them cloudy). You can use a Retainer Brite tablet once a week for a deep clean.
Call us immediately. Teeth can start to shift within a few days of not wearing a retainer. Because we use digital scans, we can often 3D print a new set from your file without you needing to come in for a new impression.
