Retainers After Braces - How to Keep Your Teeth Straight for Life

Finishing braces or clear aligners is a big moment. After months of treatment, you finally see your new smile and the results of all the appointments, adjustments and effort. But what many people do not realise is that finishing braces or aligners is not the end of orthodontic treatment. The final and most important stage is retention.
Retainers are what keep your teeth straight after treatment. Without retainers, teeth can gradually move back towards their original position over time. This is completely natural and happens because the tissues around the teeth need time to stabilise after orthodontic treatment.
At Dublin Orthodontics, retainers are a key part of our treatment. Our goal is not just to straighten teeth, but to keep them straight long term. That is why retainers are included in your treatment plan and why we provide clear guidance on how and when to wear them after treatment.
Why Do Teeth Move After Braces or Aligners?
Teeth are not fixed in bone like a screw in a wall. They are held in place by fibres and bone that can adapt and change over time. Orthodontic treatment gently moves teeth into a new position, but the surrounding bone and fibres need time to stabilise around the new position.
Even after treatment finishes, there is still a natural tendency for teeth to move slightly. This is especially common in the lower front teeth, where crowding can return if retainers are not worn.
This is why retention is so important. Retainers hold your teeth in their new position while everything stabilises, and they continue to hold them in place long term.
What Types of Retainers Are There?
After orthodontic treatment, we usually provide a combination of fixed and removable retainers. This combination approach gives long-term stability and helps keep your teeth straight for life.
Fixed Retainers
A fixed retainer is a thin wire that is bonded behind the front teeth. It cannot be seen from the front and stays in place at all times. Fixed retainers are commonly used on the lower front teeth and sometimes on the upper front teeth as well.
Because the retainer is fixed in place, it works all the time without you having to remember to put it in. It is very effective at preventing the common crowding that can happen in the front teeth over time.
Removable Retainers
Removable retainers are clear retainers that fit over your teeth, similar to clear aligners. These are usually worn at night.
We take a digital scan at the end of treatment to make your retainers so they are custom-made to fit your teeth precisely. Wearing your removable retainers as advised is very important to keep your teeth in their new position.
Using both fixed and removable retainers together provides the best long-term stability, which is why we recommend this approach after braces or clear aligners.
How Long Do You Have to Wear Retainers?
This is one of the most common questions patients ask.
The short answer is that retainers are for long-term wear. You will need to wear your removable retainers every night to keep your teeth straight. We often explain this as night time wear for the long term.
This might sound like a big commitment, but wearing retainers at night quickly becomes part of your routine, just like brushing your teeth. The alternative is that teeth can move over time, which may mean needing more orthodontic treatment in the future.
If you have had orthodontic treatment, wearing retainers is the way to protect the time and investment you have already made.
What Happens If You Stop Wearing Your Retainers?
If retainers are not worn, teeth can start to move. This movement can be small at first, but over time it can become more noticeable. Some patients notice slight crowding returning, while others may notice spacing opening or bite changes.
If retainers are left out for too long, they may no longer fit properly. When this happens, new retainers may be needed, or in some cases, further orthodontic treatment may be required to correct the movement.
This is why we always recommend wearing retainers as advised and contacting us if your retainer feels tight, uncomfortable or no longer fits properly.
Looking After Your Retainers
Properly looking after your retainers will help them last longer and keep working as they should.
Here are some simple tips:
· Always store removable retainers in their retainer box when not in use.
· Keep them away from heat.
· Clean them regularly as advised.
· Do not wrap them in tissue, as they can be accidentally thrown away.
· Bring your retainers to review appointments if we ask you to
Fixed retainers also need to be looked after. It is important to brush carefully around the fixed wire and to attend regular dental check-ups so your dentist can ensure everything is clean and healthy.
Replacement Retainers
Retainers can wear out over time, and removable retainers may need to be replaced occasionally. If a retainer is lost or broken, please contact us as soon as possible so we can arrange a replacement.
The sooner a retainer is replaced, the less likely it is that teeth will move.
Because we keep digital scans on file after treatment, replacement retainers can usually be made without repeating the full records process, depending on the situation.
Retainers After Clear Aligners and Braces
Some patients think retainers are only needed after braces, but retainers are required after both braces and clear aligners. The type of treatment you had does not change the need for retention.
Whether you had metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces or clear aligners, retainers are the final stage of treatment and are essential to keep your teeth straight.
Orthodontic treatment does not end when braces come off or when you finish your last aligner. It ends when your teeth have been retained and stabilised.
Retainers and Long-Term Smile Stability
When we plan orthodontic treatment, we are not just thinking about how your teeth will look when treatment finishes. We are also thinking about how your teeth will look years later. That is why retention is built into the treatment process from the beginning.
We take scans for retainers as soon as treatment finishes, so they fit your teeth perfectly in their new positions. We also explain how to wear them and what to expect long-term.
Keeping your teeth straight is a long-term commitment, but it is a simple one. Wearing retainers at night is the easiest way to maintain your smile.

The Most Important Part of Orthodontic Treatment
Many people think braces or clear aligners are the most important part of orthodontic treatment, but in reality, retainers are just as important. Braces and aligners straighten your teeth, but retainers keep them straight.
If retainers are worn as advised, your teeth can stay straight long term. If retainers are not worn, teeth can move.
It really is that simple.
If You Are Starting Orthodontic Treatment
If you are thinking about starting braces or clear aligners, it is important to understand from the beginning that retainers are part of the process. When we plan your treatment, we are planning not just how to straighten your teeth, but how to keep them straight as well.

Orthodontic treatment is a process with a clear beginning, middle and end:
