Many adults spend years thinking about straightening their teeth before they ever pick up the phone or book a consultation. For some, it is something they have always wanted to do but never had the chance when they were younger. For others, their teeth have moved over time, and they are now noticing crowding, spacing or bite changes that were not there before. And for many adults, the main reason is confidence. They simply want to feel better about their smile.

One of the most common things we hear from adult patients is, “I am probably too old for braces.” The truth is that adult orthodontics is very common, and it is never too late to straighten your teeth. Teeth can be moved at almost any age, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. We treat adult patients every day across our clinics.

If you are considering adult orthodontic treatment, the first thing to know is that treatment today is very different to what many people remember from years ago. Modern orthodontics gives adults more choice, more discreet options and more predictable treatment planning than ever before.

Why More Adults Are Choosing Orthodontic Treatment

There are a few main reasons why more adults are now choosing orthodontic treatment.

The first is confidence. Many adults feel self-conscious about crooked or crowded teeth, especially in work environments, social situations or photographs. Straightening your teeth can make a big difference to how you feel about your smile.

The second is that teeth can move over time. Even if you had braces when you were younger, your teeth can shift if retainers were not worn long-term. We often see adults who had orthodontic treatment in their teens but now notice crowding returning, especially in the lower front teeth.

The third reason is that adults now have more discreet treatment options. Many people do not like the idea of visible braces, which is why clear aligners, ceramic braces and lingual braces have become very popular with adult patients.

What Are the Options for Adult Braces?

We offer several orthodontic treatment options for adults, and the most suitable one depends on your teeth, your bite and your lifestyle.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are one of the most popular options for adult orthodontics because they are discreet and removable. The aligners are custom-made using a digital scan of your teeth and are designed to gradually move your teeth into the planned position over time.

Aligners are usually worn for around 22 hours per day and changed every 1 to 2 weeks. They are removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing and flossing. Treatment typically takes 18 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the tooth movement.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are still one of the most effective ways to move teeth and are often used for more complex tooth movements or bite correction. They are fixed to the teeth and adjusted at regular review appointments to ensure the teeth continue to move in a controlled way.

Treatment with metal braces usually takes between 18 and 24 months, depending on the case.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces work in the same way as metal braces but use tooth-coloured brackets, so they are less noticeable. Many adult patients choose ceramic braces because they want fixed treatment but with a more discreet appearance.

Treatment time is similar to that of metal braces and usually falls between 18 and 24 months.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are fixed braces that are placed behind the teeth so they are not visible from the front. This makes them one of the most discreet orthodontic options available, while still allowing very precise tooth movement.

Lingual braces are often suitable for adults who want a hidden option but need the control of fixed braces.

How Adult Orthodontic Treatment Works

One of the things adults often worry about is not knowing what the process actually looks like. The orthodontic journey is very structured, and we guide you through each step.

Step 1 - Complimentary Consultation

The first step is a complimentary consultation, during which we take digital photographs and a 3D scan of your teeth, and discuss what you would like to change about your smile. We will explain what treatment options are suitable, how long treatment is likely to take and what the costs are likely to be.

There is no pressure to go ahead with treatment after this appointment. The goal is simply to give you the information you need to make a decision.

Step 2 - Records Appointment

If you decide to proceed, the next step is a records appointment, during which we take detailed diagnostics, such as X-rays and final scans. These records allow us to plan your treatment with great precision.

Step 3 - Written Treatment Plan

After your records appointment, we provide a written treatment plan that includes your treatment duration, what type of appliance we recommend and a full quote. We also explain payment plan options at this stage.

Step 4 - Start Treatment

In many cases, treatment can start very soon after the records appointment. From there, you attend review appointments at regular intervals so we can monitor progress and make adjustments where needed.

How Long Does Adult Orthodontic Treatment Take?

This is one of the most common questions adults ask. In general, most adult orthodontic treatment takes between 18 and 24 months. The exact treatment time depends on the amount of tooth movement required and the type of treatment used.

It is important to remember that orthodontic treatment is a gradual process. Teeth need to move slowly and safely, which is why treatment takes time. The goal is not just to move teeth quickly, but to move them properly and achieve a stable result.

Are Braces or Aligners Better for Adults?

This depends on the individual case and lifestyle.

Clear aligners are very popular with adults because they are discreet and removable. They are often a great option for adults who want flexibility and a more subtle treatment.

Fixed braces, including metal, ceramic, and lingual braces, can be especially useful when more complex tooth movement is needed or when very precise control is required.

When you come for a consultation, we will explain which options are suitable for your teeth and why. Many adults are suitable for more than one option, and the decision often comes down to appearance, lifestyle and personal preference.

Cost of Adult Orthodontics and Payment Plans

We understand that cost is an important factor for adult patients. Orthodontic treatment is an investment, but we make it as manageable as possible by offering interest-free payment plans. Many patients spread the cost over monthly payments throughout treatment.

Orthodontic treatment may also qualify for tax relief, reducing the overall cost of treatment.

Your quote is all-inclusive and covers your appointments, appliances, scans, X-rays and retainers at the end of treatment. We will always explain costs clearly before treatment starts so you know exactly what to expect.

Retainers After Adult Orthodontics

One of the most important parts of orthodontic treatment is retention. After your braces or aligners are finished, retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions.

Without retainers, teeth can move over time. We provide retainers at the end of treatment and advise patients on how to wear them long-term to keep their teeth straight. This is a very important part of protecting your result.

Taking the First Step

Many adults think about straightening their teeth for years before doing anything about it. The hardest part is usually just taking the first step and scheduling a consultation.

The consultation is complimentary and gives you the chance to see your options, how long treatment would take, and what the costs would be. From there, you can decide if and when you want to start treatment.

If you have been thinking about straightening your teeth for a while, it is never too late to start. Adult orthodontics is very common, and modern treatment options mean you can straighten your teeth in a way that suits your lifestyle.
